Digital Communication
(Joy Panic)
Every day we take part in or witness talk of as many natures as there are people around us. In fact that?s only a part of it. We are constantly in the middle of a hurricane of all kinds of talk. Only realising this, can we have any hope of escaping this hurricane even temporarily. In addition to the, shall we say, live talk around us, we are either blessed or cursed to receive also so much talk that reaches us through the media. The Behaviorists were laughed at for thinking that human thought could be deciphered by observing the movement of our larynx, supposing, that all human thought brings about an internal, inaudible but physical dialogue. I too sometimes find myself mumbling to myself when deep in thought, but rather dislike it, at lest when I find myself in public transport. There is a chance that my head is not empty of all thought when I sometimes shut up. Never the less, be our observing faculties however conscious or unconscious, our brain has an uncanning knack of piecing together information from all around us and trying to make it into some kind of whole. This more often than we care to admit, happens in some form of dialogue, which really in the end, even without too much stretching of the point could be seen as talk. What kind of talk, then, do we witness and practise? When considering most of the subliminal talk around us, it?s not hard to come to the conclusion that a lot of it is aimed at us in order for us to find yet another dream fulfilled at oh, but a reasonable cost. Another hefty piece in this cake of talk is thus naturally related to how, why or what we should get ourselves to fulfil our dreams. Thank goodness we are, if we choose, in some control of the talk we ourselves practise! Like children practising the art of politeness, we adults too can muse for even a moment in advance, whether our mouth issues the utterance: - No! or - Don?t! in stead of, - Well, let?s look at this for a while. Stephen Covey, an absolute wizard of a corporate consultant, incouragingly, in his book: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, created a vision of a virtual pause button in our mind, that, once recognised begins to bring incredible benefits to its considerate user. I most certainly hope in time to practise and master the use of this pause button. Not only by further considering the torrent of words I flush upon the world daily. I also desire to become more skilled at deciphering and thinking, if not acting upon the talk that is aimed at myself and all of us, whether it be live or digital. The word digital itself is derived from the Latin word digit, meaning finger. One of the earliest forms of digital communication is said to be the native American method of using smoke as signals. The smoke was used to construct a message that for miles could be seen and hopefully put together into a meaning the sender had in mind. Not too many of the European settlers competently read smoke messages. Therefore it is understandable that billows of smoke from atop a neighbouring mountain may often have been witnessed with some worry. Even if it may simply have said: Great Spirit has given Chief Running Bear the present of a strong baby boy. Come celebrate. Actually, they probably sent horsemen for such a party call. The fact remains that we many times are left guessing at what our present day smoke signals are really trying to point the finger at. If we even bother to think about it. However, to conclude happily, we know that however familiar the maxim: -Talk is cheap, actions talk., the world HAS somehow been changed by Luis Armstong melodiously rasping to us, - What a wonderful World?!, ooh, yeah?
