Right?
(Joy Panic)
What is right and what are human rights are much spoken topics these days We know as we begin to watch the news or as we open the newspaper that we are not going to learn many bed time stories today, unless, of course, they are Grimm. Each of us no doubt have our own personal way of leading our lives in the shape it may have so far taken, may it be as a parent or child, we all know that as long as our parents are alive, to them we?ll always be kids. Some may like being who they are in the position they find themselves in more than others. Some may think life is a curse bestowed upon humankind ( spreading of hands ) but can you do? Some, myself included, think the answers can be found by shopping around in different religions, a pastime that the revered Tibetan Buddhist Scholar Sogyal Rimpoche has wisely warned Westeners not to do. But then again there are also those who express their doubt in religions altogether, after all, they cannot even agree on what should and what shouldn?t be eaten. There is, however something that they seem to have agreed upon. In fact there may be untold such examples, today however I wish to point at The Declaration of Human Rights, adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution of the 10th of December 1948. I heartily recommend it as a thought provoking read. A declaration of 30 articles that would take too long to go over here so I?ll content myself with reading you the first: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Sums it up nicely, right? Yet ever since the industrial revolution it growingly seems that international laws best protect those who own the biggest chunk of media, armament- and energy recources, at best all three simultaneously. The media tells the story that justifies the trying out of newly developed weapons and the oil companies laugh all the way to the bank. But this is only half the story. The brighter half being that as information about nearly anything under the sun is getting ever easier to find, humanity is beginning to ask: - Is this right? Hands up all those who recognise the male singer of the song with the chorusline: -The Times They Are A Changing ! Right, Bob Dylan sang these words first time decades ago and never have they rang truer than today. The world has, they say grown smaller. This actually is true, what with glaciers all over melting at a rapid rate. It also means that we can today, communicate with nearly anyone in the world. Let?s assume we were given a chance to communicate with everyone in the world. Would you know what to say? I think I?d say: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Right?
