The Phantom Toll Booth
(Juster, Norton)
This book is a prize. It has been transmediated into plays and who knows what else. While written as a fantasy for young people it really deserves an adult readership. Milo, a young boy, wakes up, finds a toy toll booth in his bedroom and drives through it-finding on the other side that he has entered a strange world of adventure. As he proceeds he meets characters like Tick Tock, the Watch Dog who says things like: "Time is a gift, given to you the time you need, to have the time of your life." Soon he learns that Rhyme and Reason are lost and the rest of the tale is the quest to restore Rhyme and Reason to the world. How many of us are on the same quest? Required reading for all elected OFFICIALS. One thing you will learn in this book is how to get out of the DOLDRUMS.
