Painful Memories
"Grandpa, can you tell me about the holocaust and about your survival?", begged Dvora. "All right, Dvora, I will"' said grandpa, set Dvora in his lap and began with his story.
"Iwas 8 when the war started. My parents, (Ronen and Ronit), heard rumors about the Natzis' actions. Along with their godd hearted friends, Ofrat and Ofir, they suggested I would hide in their hidden bunker untill the war would end. Ofrat and Ofir, which were German, let me in their bunker. It was not exposed: the bunker was built in the basement, in a hidden corner, a small rug hiding it, an old couch standing diagonally from one wall to the other was hiding the rug, and Ofra, which was a smart woman, created more hiding places for me by filling the basement with additional items which would prevent the couch from standing out. Ofir gave me a flashlight, since the bunker was extremely dark. every morning, wither Ofir or Ofra has brought me food for the whole day or enough for several long days. The bunker had 3 beds, and it also included a shelf for books and games. I was thinking about my mom and dad, and how they would find me after the was and we would all live together".
Dvora asked, "Grandpa, how come you didn't go crazy from hiding in the bunker for weeks?". "Ahhhh, I was sometimes reading a book or something like that. Many months passed, and one day I heard weird voices from upstairs. Those voices where loud, the language was German, but luckily I could understand German and I knew what was said. I realized that the Germans were looking for Jews hidden in hiding places. A few minutes later, I heard steps of people coming down to the basement, I started to feel fear and my heart was beating fast. When they came to the basemnet, I could hear an explosion, and noises made by the removal of different items. Ofrat and Ofir came down to the basement and into the bunker. They told me about everything that happened and said the Germans have left, They aded that it would only take a few days before the Germans would come back and find me eventually. We all sat on the bed, trying to find a solution which would allow us all to go on with our lives without the Natzis finding me. Suddenely, Ofir had an idea, to transfer me to a small town where his aunt lives, a town located far away from here, that the Natzis did not reach to yet. Ofir rented a wagon and dressed me up as a German boy, loaded the wagon with flour and straw bags, sat me on them and we hit the road. We were going through impassable roads since we were affraid we would bump into barriers with Natzis there. After two days, some Natzis stopped us in order to check our papers. Luckily the checking went well, thanks to some faked IDs in a superb quality. after another day and night of conatant riding, we finally made it to the town in which Ofir's aunt was living, her name was Hanna. Ofir explained my situation to her, she has agreed to take care of me, and that's how I ended up staying with her and with her husband Itzik. Hanna prepared a faked ID for me and sent me to a German school. My life has completely chaged, I studied and became successful. When the war was over I was 13 and made an Aliyah to Israel. I met new people, new places and had new life".
"Thank you for telling me"' said Dvore. "Now I can write your story and file it to my teacher".
