Author Poppy Z. Brite veers from her usual horror fare to serve up a fascinating study of one of the most controversial entertainers of our time.Brite admits she feels strange doing this because she knows Love personally.Love Michelle Harrison,nee Courtney,has a long,battle scarred,trashy.flashy career as a rock musician,media brat,opportunist,movie actress,and ex-stripper.Whatever tribulations she has lived through in the public eye,she has never been boring.As for whether she deserves the title of First Widow Of Grunge Rock,that seems a personal perspective.
Allegations have been flying for years that she was personally involved in the death of her ex-husband,Kurt Cobain.Certainly she has benefited outrageously from his demise.Her own father has been videotaped claiming she had a fifty thousand dollar contract out on him. I find this dubious for two reasons: Kurt was doing a good enough job destroying his existence and it was simply a matter of time.Secondly, if the apple does not fall far from the tree,her father would have said nearly anything to get in a little importance on his own time.Always admittedly a strange woman,we are told about Love going upstairs after the suicide and lying down in her husband's blood.After searching aimlessly,she finds a bit of skin with a bit of hair attached,holds it tightly in one fist,pulls on a dirty sweater of Kurt's and crawls into bed.Friends arrive bearing drugs for her,in some alternative rock version of a zoned out wake,with Courtney in the center,recieving condolences and chemicals at the same time.
I hesitate to say either way.Certainly money and fame have not made her life any less difficult.She is a very good actress,blowing critics away as Larry Flynt's wife,to name one.It seems she has a plethora of glamorous opportunities blow her way,but somehow she always seems to shoot herself in the foot.Her undeniable charisma keep us watching her,even if we kid ourselves we are appalled by much of her behaviour.She has a bizarre type of fascination for us,rather like watching a car go over a cliff.So far,she has managed to slam on the brakes in time.Poppy takes us inside her upside down world where the deviant are celebrated and the successful are mocked.I find Courtney Love a riveting personality, a loudmouth,and an icon.This book is the best biography of her I have yet to read.
