Titus Alone
(Mervyn Peake)
I was living in Europe probably somewhere in central Geneva, Switzerland and wondered what to do when this book was introduced to our readers' circle. I loved the notion of fantasy especially Grimm and those fairytales... I can well remember our Headmistress reading aloud some of the stories to us as prep students in the 1950s. We used to bite our lip in order not to express any emotion. We wouldnt scream aloud we held together whatever we felt in order with the discipline of that period in schooling. Title ALone provides an iron discipline of Gormenghast and sets forth in this book, one of a Trilogy to explore those ideas` The idea of a quest has always been central to writing of high culture: ULYSSES by James Joyce is a case in point! Most students spend hours working out the story in and around the poetry of the writing! I am never without a job in this instance. Gormenghast trilogy is about Titus Groan and his life. The writer is Mevyn Peake and his language is compared to a /tidal wave/ I think the language is the strength of this book. But for today's readership it needs a bit of "watering down" I suppose because television, film and the DVD have really taken over and apart from reciting your poems for special occasions very few people have the time or inclination to wade through poetry language in its entirety. But having said that it is interesting to observe that recently while travelling on buses in and out of London I see many a silent passenger deep in the book of the day ... reading away, as if in the University Library with never a thought for the roadsigns or the window they have left open or indeed their briefcase or handbag lying across my feet! I tend to /look up/ to see what's going on. I used to be ordered to /get my head out of that book/ it was a good instruction as I have perfect poise and I became a 1st in Drama in Ireland and in Shakespearian Drama here in the UK. However, I feel confident that Mr. Peake will always be popular ... it at first you dont succeed try try again .... happy reading ...
