Harry is about to start his third year at Hogwarts and gets to know that a criminal named Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban only to kill him. All his teachers are closely watching him and the Dementors, guards from Azkaban, always make him faint, also he is not allowed to visit Hogsmeade, a wizard village. Among these troubles he has some good news as Hagrid being appointed the Professor for Care of Magical Creatures and Professor Lupin, Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, promising to give him Anti-Dementor lessons. Hagrid gets into trouble from his very first class because a Hippogriff, Buckbeak, injured Malfoy and it is being sentenced to execution and also his job gets into trouble.
There is some sort of relief for Harry when he wins the Quidditch cup for Gryffindor.
When he sneaks up at Hogsmeade he hears from Cornelius Fudge, Minister for Magic, that Sirius Black had been a very good friend of his dad, James Potter, and was the Secret-Keeper of the Potters when they found out that Lord Voldemort was after them. But he betrayed them leading to the death of his parents. This angered Harry more than anything and his hatred for Sirius strengthens enough with feeling enough to kill him.
With the start of the exams Harry has to concentrate on his studies. At the last date of his exams, Buckbeak is sentenced to execution. Harry, Ron and Hermione is trapped by a dog who was Sirius Black turned as an Animagus. Many secrets are revealed by Sirius Black and Lupin such as Peter Pettigrew still being alive and transformed himself as a rat, which Ron owned, named Scabbers. Peter had been the Potters Secret-Keeper who had betrayed them. The Marauder?s Map that Harry used, to get into Hogsmeade had actually been written by Moony, Padfoot, Wormtail, and Prongs who were none other than Lupin, Black, Peter and James. Peter is finally revealed in his own self and it has been decided to take him to the castle to the Dementors. But there is a story behind Lupin who turns into a werewolf as he was bitten by a wolf when he was a child and it was a full moon night. When they were taking Peter to castle to be handed to the Dementors Lupin suddenly changed into a werewolf and gets away. Taking advantage of this situation Peter transforms and escapes and Black is taken under captive.
Harry and Hermione use the time turner to get back and save Buckbeak. Hermione?s secret as to how she attended her classes is revealed. Buckbeak is saved and it flies away with Black into hiding.
Thus the story ends with two innocent lives being saved by Harry, Ron and Hermione. Harry finally gets the permission to visit Hogsmeade next year as Black, being his guardian, gives him the permission letter.
