List of Characters and a Description of Each: Ramon (a boy who earns money by hunting for pearls), Ramon's father (a great pear diver who was lost forever in a shipwreck), an Indian friend (who teaches Ramon how to dive for pearls), Gaspar Ruiz the Sevillano the (the only survivor of Ramon's father's shipwreck) and Manta Diablo (a giant manta ray who by the legend, is the protector of the black pearl).
The boy, Ramon Salazar is the son of a great pearl diver. Ramon is 16 years old and lives in a small town named La Paz (in Mexico). In this story Ramon is the main character, and he?s the one who tells the plot. Ramon is ambitious, brave, smart and reserved. When the Sevillano teases Ramon he doesn?t get angry and prefers to keep to himself what he has to say to him.
The Plot: The Black Pearl is about a boy named Ramon who works with his father, a great pear diver. His job is to find the weight and value of the pearls his father comes home with. An Indian friend teaches Ramon how to dive for pearls. Ramon decides to dive in search for ?The Great Black Pearl of Heaven!?. When he finds it, he gives it to his father who places it at the Statue of the Madonna. One stormy night, Ramon?s father goes out and never comes back. His pearling fleet had sunk. He and his crew, except for one, are drowned. After taking over his father?s job, Ramon goes to the statue of the Madonna. Ramon decides to steal the pearl because hr fears the Manta Diablo, a giant Manta Ray that supposedly owns the Black Pearl. Ramon rushes out to the boats to return the pearl back to the sea. He rows far out into the sea. But then the Sevillano, the only member of the crew that survived, came rowing after him. Knowing Ramon wants to throw the pearl into the ocean, the Sevillano takes over the boat and starts giving orders to Ramon. He wants the pearl too! But in the end he drowns by being caught in his own harpoon line. Ramon knows the Manta Diablo is real and alive. He knows this because he saw with his own eyes the Manta Diablo kill the Sevillano, and this prompted him to throw back ?The Great Pearl of Heaven?.

Did I enjoy this book? This is a great book! Scott O?Dell gave so much description. My favorite part was when Ramon went to the manta?s cave to get the pearl of heaven. When the Sevillano was drowning in the sea, I felt happy for Ramon, and knew he was happy too. I also felt bad for the Manta Diablo. He had so many harpoons stuck in his back! I liked this adventurous book.
