The Lucifer Code
(Michael Cordy)
Abstract written by: Pat Kavanagh. The Lucifer Code was originally entitled ?Lucifer?. Whether the change of title was intended to take advantage of the success of The DaVinci Code is unclear. If so, the move was good in terms of marketing, but less so in terms of relevance to the content as there isn?t any ?code? in the book (apart from a short reference to DNA). The book is written in 3 parts and a prologue which describes a girl?s experience as she underwent an operation. This prologue creates an air of mystery and leaves the reader intrigued as to what is going on. The first part builds some of the story, and introduces the main characters. Dr Miles Fleming is an atheist medical researcher who has developed a machine to assist amputees to control prosthetic limbs. Dr Amber Grant suffers from mysterious migraines. Dr Bradley Soames is a wealthy industrialist while Xavier Accosta, (The Red Pope) is a former leader of the Catholic Church. The story centres around Dr Soames? and Xavier Accosta?s efforts to communicate with souls of the dead using high technology. To this end, they kill numerous people from hospices in order to find the ?frequency? to tune in to. When this yields slow progress, they kidnap Dr Grant. She is the girl from the prologue and her operation was to separate her from her twin, resulting in her ability to ?die? repeatedly. Meanwhile, Dr Fleming?s brother dies and is heard apparently to speak via computer after death. Eventually, Soames finds himself in need of Fleming?s computer, which he gets by manipulation, and as a result, Fleming is drawn into rescuing Dr Grant, the world and civilisation as we know it from Soames, who turns out to be deranged. This is probably the best part of the book, where the story really starts moving along with some pace. The book is a reasonably entertaining read, as long as it is remembered that it is a novel. The Science and Theology in the book are to be taken with a (large) pinch of salt and in fairness to the author, he does not appear to pretend to be an expert in either.
