Love story-----Sohni-Mahiwaal Sohni Mahiwaal is a legendry love story in Punjab?s culture and inseparable chapter of Punjabi literature.Centuries back in the state of Gujraat (Pakistan) an exceptionally gorgeous young woman named Sohani daughter of a potter Tulle lived. Her beauty was outstanding so her parents named her as Sohni (A Punjabi word that means beautiful). Her extra ordinary beauty was the issue of heart-to-heart between young men and many of them were trying to impress her. Once a wandering businessman from Balakh Bhukhara Mirza Ichat Beg visited Gujraat and saw Sohni in the market. As soon as their eyes touched each other, they fell in love at first sight. To live in the vicinity of Sohni, Ichat Beg gave up his whole business and become servant of Tulle as custodian of his buffalos. Everyday Mirza Beg go and get the creatures to meadows for grazing. He was then famous as Mahiwaal (a Punjabi word used for the care taker of pet animals). Meanwhile Sohni-Mahiwaal?s love went up on high spirits and each & everyone in the town was amused with their unconditional love. But Tulle despite of great agitation forced Sohni to marry someone else. Now she lived with her in laws far away on the bank of river Chinaab. Mahiwal constructed a hut on the other bank of Chinaab and lived there. Daily in the evening Sohni used to swim upon a pitcher from one to another bank of Chinaab to meet Mahiwaal. She usually spends night with her and swims back to her in laws house before dawn, concealing her pitcher in the bushes outside her house. Sohni was fond of baked fish and while waiting for her, Mahiwaal sitting on the bank of river do enjoy fishing. He used to catch fish everyday and bake them on fire. Once he was not able to catch any fish and sitting worried about Sohni?s food. At once he got the idea and tore off his thigh. Then he pulls out a big piece of flesh from inside and baked it upon fire with spices. In the evening Sohni enjoyed the delicious food and praised. Mahiwaal was also happy that he kept his promise. But Suddenly Mahiwaal knocked down and Sohni saw the wound on his thigh. She understood the whole scene and did bandages. When Mahiwal got back his consciousness she wept bitterly. His self sacrificed and dedicated love amazed her. But all these happy moments of love didn?t remained for long period. Her family had discovered about her night absence and her sister in law decided to teach her a lesson. She exchanged her hard old pitcher with a new unbaked soft pitcher. In the evening Sohni picks up this unsafe perishable pitcher and went down to the roaring Chinaab. That evening cyclone was thundering in the river. But to keep her promise she insisted to go and meet Mahiwaal. But her destiny was against her. As she was near to reach the other bank of Chinaab where Mahiwaal was waiting for her, the unbaked soft pitcher started melting and Sohni was drowning. When Mahiwaal saw her drowning he jumped in the water to help her. But it was too late she was no more. Mahiwaal gave up swimming and took Sohni in his embrace. Both died together though they were not allowed to live together. This heart catching story of immortal love fascinated many poets of the region and this story is found in many launguages i.e. Punjabi, Persian and Arabic etc. written by many renowned poets of Punjab.
