Animal Farm
(George Orwell)
Animal Farm Mr. Jones goes to bed drunk and the animals all gather in the big barn to hear Old Major speak. The pig tells of the misery Man causes animals and preaches rebellion; finally he relates his dreams of a golden future in a song: Beast of England. Old Major dies and the animals continue to hold secret meetings, organized by the pigs, the most intelligent animals. The rebellion is highly organized spontaneous; Jones gets drunk again and forgets to feed the animals, so they drive him, his wife and his men off the farm. They burn all the reins, bits whips and knives, and enter the farmhouse. Snowball, one of the pigs, changes the name of the farm and writes seven Commandments. The hay harvest is the best ever and all the animals are happy. Napoleon, the other pig, takes puppies away to educate them secretly. The fame of Animal Farm grows and, in particular, its song. In October, the pigeons bring news that Jones is leading an attack. He is defeated with only one animal killed. Snowball and Boxer, the old horse, are given medals for bravery. Mollie, the mare, is the first animal to desert the farm. The frequent disagreement between Snowball and Napoleon reach a climax over the defence of the windmill. The animals are swept away by Snowball?s eloquent pleading, but are prevented from voting for him by Napoleon?s dogs that chase him away. Napoleon assumes power and abolishes debates. Mr. Pilkington is appointed as an intermediary in trading with humans. In November a very big storm destroys the windmill and building begins again. Food is scared and eggs are sold to acquire it, meanwhile Snowball is blamed for everything that goes wrong. Napoleon goes on to become less accessible. He plays Pilkington and Frederick against each other over the processed sale of timber, and is disappointed when he discovers he has been tricked. Frederick attacks the farm and destroys the windmill .Six animals are killed but the humans are defeated. To celebrate, the pigs drunk, rations are reduced and Animal Farm becomes a monarchy. Boxer, the old horse, collapses and is sold to the slaughterhouse, which holds a memorial in his honour. Years pass and the farm grows richer, only few animals remember life before the rebellion and they still have pride in their farm, this is destroyed when pigs begin to walk on their hind legs. Only one of the Commandments remains and in the final scene, pigs and humans are shown in a serious meeting. Animal Farm is now to be called Manor Farm, when the pigs and men began to drink together, they become indistinguishable from each other. First, the pigs want a better life for the animals that live on the farm, but with time the pigs take the control of the farm and are the only ones which get benefits from it.
