Inherit The Stars
(James P. Hogan)
It was the last thing that anyone expected to find on the moon. First, was the finding of a cave. Since most caves are formed by water, and the moon is lacking water, finding a cave was an unusual circumstance. Then they found the body, dubbed "Charlie" by those who uncovered his shallow grave. Charlie was nothing but skeletal remains wrapped in a bright red spacesuit. Neither government nor scientific agency reported him missing. Then carbon dating reported that Charlie was over 50, 000 years old. So begins the mystery in James P. Hogan's novel Inherit the Stars. The U.N. Space Arm, the organization exploring the moon during Charlie's discovery, appoints Dr. Victor Hunt as the lead researcher in determining Charlie's origins. Thus begins an excellent example of scientific theory at work. From Charlie's remains and artifacts discovered on his person, an entire human civilization is reconstructed. Further archaeological evidence points to a new, shocking truth: aliens had visited Earth in our prehistoric past and captured specimens of animal life (including early hominid man). These cousins to our ancestors then evolved on a completely different planet, dubbed Minerva. At first, these humans cohabited Minerva with their alien benefactors, whom they referred to as "Giants". However, once these ancient cousins gained access to fabulous technologies, the Giants fled their homeworld, leaving the humans behind to fight in their own territorial battles amongst themselves. As recorded by Charlie, this led to their eventual self destruction through the unleashing of a powerful energy weapon so powerful that it fragmented the entire planet of Minerva (knocking it out of its original orbit into its current orbit, as the Earth's moon). Inherit the Stars is a thinking man's novel. While the action is more cerebral rather than physical, it is an enjoyable read. It plays upon the idea of the ancient astronaut in a way that is believable.
