Sister of My Heart byt Dicakaruni is the first of two books about two young Indian girls who are as close as sisters. In this book we are introduced to the characters of Anju and Sudha. Anju is from a high caste family in Calcutta and Sudah, her cousin is from the disreputable side of the same family. Sudha has remarkable beauty while Anju is plain and common. However, something binds them closely together. The fact that they were born on the same day, the day their father's died. Through the course of this book we watch them grow into womanhood as their hearts, lives and fates are merged into one. Through the learning of a dark family secret and a change in family fortune the girls grow apart and are forced into arranged marriages which takes one to the states while the other remains in India. They must however turn to each other once again when tragedy strikes both their lives. Like so many Indian novels this one walks the subtle line the separates hope from despair.
