Yaws
(DR.SAJEEV VASUDEVAN)
Yaws is a chronic infectious disease that occurs in tropical countries. It is caused by the spirochetal bacterium, Treponema pertenue, a close relative of the organism that causes syphilis. Infection is usually spread by unsanitary living conditions and is nonvenereal. Occurring initially in childhood, yaws begins with warty lesions and ulcers of the skin followed several years later by tissue destruction, bone changes, and a leprosylike shortening of the fingers or toes. Large-scale administration of penicillin has greatly reduced its incidence. The incidence of yaws has been slowly decreasing throughout the world, and the disease may eventually disappear.
