Dreamweapon: Spacemen 3 and the birth of Spiritualized, is a fascinating document of the highs, lows and heavenly blows that infused cult psychedelic drone outfit, Spacemen 3. In the 1980's, Pete Kember and Jason Peirce explored minimalist sonic textures to thunderous, mind warping effect, and looked to be on the cusp of public acceptance when they ireevocably split and went their own ways, (Kember formed E.A.R and Spectrum, Pierce went on to huge success with his gospel infused rock'n'roll outfit, Spiritualized).Spacemen 3 were, and remain, a vital band for our times, they blazed a trail through the glut of unoriginal, pompours 80's music with a blend of freeform psychedelic 'wall od sound', and by exploring layered, tectured sonic soundscapes. They are the arguably the most influential, yet unknown, band to emerge from britains shores. Much like the Velvet Underground before them, they were heard by few, but were a huge influence on those lucky enough to stumble upon their mesmerising sound.Until now, very little has been written on this band, they have remained an enigma in the music world; untouched and untouchable.Who were they?What went wrong?Were the tale's of rampant drug use really all true?All the answers can be found in Morse's book. All members of the band share their accounts of the events that led to the rise and fall of these musical pioneers; and its not always a pretty story. Some of us, like myself were too young to see them when they existed, and these accounts really bring to life the atmosphere and fire of the spacemen 3 live experience. Brilliant.Also, the riotous tales of debauchery, disasterous tours, in fighting and unbelievable excess are a beauty to behold.
