The play takes place in the office of John; he is a forty-five year university professor. On the surface he is a typical professor but in fact he is arrogant and controlling. He fells himself superior to the students. John certainly interrupts Carol, a twenty year old student, insecure and worried about. As she wants to discuss her grade she goes to see her male professor. He is very busy and has got a loft of things on his mind and is not really paying much attention to her. The phone rings constantly and h tries to talk to her while he is answering the phone and writing notes to himself. (The calls are from his wife and the things they hope to buy). Carol takes everything he says as an assault, John rarely let Carol finished a thought; he will graduate her A if she goes on meeting with him in his office. Carol loses control when John approaches her physically and he goes on conforming her and inviting her to disclose her feelings. She is about to reveal a personal secret but she is stopped by a phone call. Carol uses John?s words to accuse him of rape. Carol?s insecurity is the reason for her continued visits to John?s office. She also sends mixed messages through the meetings. She pries into his private life, discusses her own personal problems and exposes herself emotionally.
At the end of the play John loses control and becomes violent, knocking Carol to the floor and threatening to hit her with a chair. So Carol leaves the room saying ?that?s right?.
