The Taming Of The Shrew
(William Shakespeare)

Publicidade
Baptista, a rich gentleman of Padua, had two daughters, Katharine and Bianca. Katharine, more known as Kate, was called as Katharine the Shrew because of her bad-temper and angry notes. Baptista was worried about her marriage but his worry vanished when Petruchio himself came to ask Kate?s hand in marriage. Their marriage was the strangest one with firstly Petruchio already late and then turning up in rages with his servant just like a beggar. He was acting as a mad man and instead of Katharine; he answered the priest?s question of whether she would become Petruchio?s wife. After marriage instead of attending the feast they set to Petruchio?s house. There Katharine was kept hungry by Petruchio as he found fault with everything. Katharine was kept not only without food but also without sleep because Petruchio used to shout every now and then at the servants. When Petruchio bought food for her she didn?t say anything because of her pride but hunger at last made her forget her pride. Petruchio ordered a cup and beautiful dress for her but found fault in them too. Petruchio wanted to make Katharine agree with whatever he says, whether it is right or wrong, until then their travel to Baptista?s house was cancelled. When Katharine agreed that it was the bright moon according to Petruchio when on the contrary it was the blessed sun, they turned to go to her father?s house. To check whether Katharine was completely tamed he called an old man as lovely maid and told her to do the same. Actually the old gentleman was Vincentio, father of Lucentio who was getting married to Bianca, Katharine?s younger sister. They traveled together to Baptista?s house where they were seated beside newly married couple Hortensio and his wife. Petruchio was being teased for marring Katharine the Shrew. So after the feast, when the ladies went, they kept a bet of hundred crowns to the one whose wife, on being called, would come at once to them. Lucentio and Hortensio lost in this bet as their wives refused to come but Petruchio was a clear winner as Katharine arrived as soon as she was called for. Petruchio won another twenty thousand crowns by Baptista when Katharine came and on his order brought Bianca and Hortensio?s wife along. Katharine also explained the importance of an obedient wife. Thus Petruchio tamed the shrew of Padua but also gained her the name of being the most obedient and dutiful wife in Padua.
