The Illustrated Light On Yoga
(BKS IYENGAR)
Originally published as THE CONCISE LIGHT ON YOGA, this present publication, titled THE ILLUSTRATED LIGHT ON YOGA,is a simple, easy to follow version by an acknowldged Master.Yehudi Menuhin, one of his early and reputed students has written a Foreword to this edition, in which he describes yoga as a system of preventing physical and mental illness and achieving calm of mind and firmness of will. One attains also, a sense of the Universal through yoga and raises oneself to one's highest potential, according to Menuhin. The author says despite the injunction that yoga should be learnt under the direction of a guru, he has tried,in all humility, to make it possible safely to practise yogic asanas and breathing techniques, by explaining the origin of each asana, illustrating poses and including all information about how and when to perform the exercises safely and correctly.A table of asanas and an exhaustive glossary add their value to this endeavour. Fiftyseven key postures, the philosophy behind yoga, techniques for stilling the mind through breathing exercises[Pranayama] and a 35-week step by step exercise regimen are explained clearly.Iyengar Yoga as it has come to be known, is practised all over the world today by millions of students who wish to create order and calm in the midst of frenetically-paced lives. The book contains a list of Associations and Centres world-wide with their addresses. Hints and cautions, qualifications for fitness, matters about cleanliness and food, time and place, posture and other important rules of correct practice preced the section on Pranayama techniques. Yoga, as a New Age fad, has gained currency in the world and its business potential is being reaped by some unscrupulous 'teachers' with limited knowledge. This can create a lot of harm to the student and the reputation of the system itself through misunderstanding/wrong practice.A book like Iyengar's therefore, puts yoga in its right traditional perspective, even while it caters to the modern time-deprived soul a way of learning correctly without having to fit in a schedule of classes outside one's home. The beautifully-serene faces of Iyengar and his Teacher,T.Krishnamacharya of Mysore, the impressive balance and concentration visible in the pictures illustrating various asanas, the lucid description of the method and effects of performing these are a sure invitation to the reader to achieve order of mind and body through yogic practice. The quotations from the Upanishads,Indian philosophical treatises and their learned commentators, and some of the legends that surround the postures themselves enhance the value of this valuable book to achieve physical and mental fitness.
