For those who saw the movie Jurassic Park for its special effects only, this book would be an enjoyable addition to your library. Dinopix, by graphic designer Teruhisa Tajima, is an unusual, visually stunning collection of dinosaurs seemingly wandering through our world. This mock-naturalistic view of the animal world is quite effective, and Tajima's dinosaurs do a wonderful job of adapting to the modern world. "Ankylosaurus on the Railway" and "Ankylosaurus on a Canyon Road" both feature the feisty herbivore walking on a misty morning. "Pentaceratops Crossing the Road" captures the image of a tank like creature crossing against traffic, presenting a road hazard even the largest semi has to worry about. Even the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex is featured, apparently on a trek through Hollywood, California. Out of all of the dinosaurs, Tajima features mighty Brachiosaurus the most. "Brachiosaurus on Bora Bora Island" is so lush and tropical that even removing the dinosaurs the picture would be captivating. The other memorable photograph is "Brachiosaurus on Route 15", in which a small herd of these gigantic beasts cross a shimmering highway in the American desert. "Barosaurus in Edmonton" features another giant herbivore rearing up its massive frame to peek over a mirrored skyscraper. Overall, Dinopix features 79 different photographs. Tajima has done a wonderful job of seamlessly incorporating the dinosaurs into lifelike and realistic poses. What is most impressive about this book is that it really helps capture that spirit of wonder that many, especially children, first get when they first take a trip to the museum and see the massive remains up close. Unlike Jurassic Park and its sequels, which had an underlying hint of menace, Dinopix exhibits a sense of curiosity and grandeur. Should there be a child in your life with a strong interest in dinosaurs, this book is strongly recommended.
