The Dashwood Family are beset with problems. The death of the Father leaves the Mother and her three unmarried Daughters homeless and with very little money. The Fathers estate is taken over by his Brother leaving the Dashwood women to move to a relatively small place and they find they have to face a significant fall in social standing.
The chances of getting the young women married to suitable men is reduced by their less wealthy state.
Elinor is the sensible one. She is careful with her feelings and not prone to dramatic outbursts. She harbours a secrest love for Edward Ferras. A man with a few awakward secrets of his own that would make it difficult for them to begin a romance.
Marrianne is the younger Sister who is tempestuous and passionate. She falls for Willoughby. One of the brooding heartbreaker types. Dispite his been up to no good. Marianne encourages his attentions.
This book shows how each of the Sisters react to their romantic misfortunes and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requsite happy ending forms the heart of the novel.
