This is a typical Ludlum thriller but kept up with the times with the plot being germ warfare. The crisis in the story started when victims at random started to die mysteriously of an unknown virus. But a number of them were from soldiers who have served for some time in Iraq. Scientists at the US government Laboratory USAMRIID where Dr. Sophia Russel works frantically searched for a similar virus but could not find any with the same symptoms. Her boyfriend Colonel Jon Smith also works there. Smith was a former FBI and a friend of his Bill Griffin, and ex FBI man too was disillusioned by the service and now works with the perpetrators of the virus. His friendship with Smith goes back during their school and growing up days. And he does not want him killed. Help was asked from all over the world but they could not find any cure for the unknown virus. Dr. Russel remembered a field trip in her college days in her anthropology class. She was in Peru and met Dr. Victor Tremont who was gathering specimens for Blanchard Pharmaceuticals. Tremont found out that some tribesmen there have a cure for a virus which she thought was similar to the virus now. Tremont denied any memory of these and decided that Russel now a threat to the money making potential of Blanchard and has to be eliminated. They have circulated the virus in the hope of creating an epidemic and make the US government and other countries who needed the antibiotic pay up big for them. Smith found her fiancee dying and contaminated with the same virus she was researching on. At first they thought she accidentally contaminated herself but after a few days Smith saw the needle mark in her ankle which was not visible at first on the first autopsy. The head scientist and an assistant was killed too as Tremont was able to transfer one scientist to Japan and planted a spy in his place. Tremont has some higher up officials in the government secretly on the board of Blanchard. He also knew that Griffin warned smith secretly so they are both on the death list. So the two being ex-FBIU men knew how to defend themselves and created problems for Tremont. Smith was on their trail following the movement of soldiers who were stationed in Iraq who were contaminated and died after. He was nearly captured by Republican guards but was saved by Sonia?s sister Randi who is a CIA agent working undercover in Iraq. Randi hated him for not saving her boyfriend from a misdiagnosed illness. After learning of her sisters death she decided to help Smith find the source of the virus. hey were captured by Iraqi soldiers bribed by Tremont but saved by Rabdi?s Ci
