Alice?s Adventures In Wonderland (1865)
(Lewis Carroll)

Publicidade
Alice's Adventures in
Wonderland (1865) was originally published as Alice's Adventures Under Ground. The story
centers on a seven-year-old girl named Alice, who fell asleep in a meadow and
dreamt that a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her. Her curiosity was
piqued when the White Rabbit took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, looked
at it, and then hurried on, muttering to itself, ?Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be
late!? In her pursuit after the Rabbit, she plunged down a rabbit hole, and
eventually found herself in Wonderland. In a world that is strange and
seemingly crazy, she met eccentric characters such as Cheshire Cat, the Mad
Hatter, the March Hare, and the King and Queen of Hearts. In the wondrous and often
bizarre adventures, Alice
encountered a way of living and reasoning that is very different from her own. Her
initial attempts to reason in numerous discussions that do not follow the
daylight logic soon evolved into an understanding of the creatures that lived
in Wonderland.

Thematically, Wonderland is actually our own world, seen
through the eyes of a child. Alice?s
Adventures in Wonderland represents the child?s struggle to survive in the
confusing world of adults. The growing understanding of the initially
incomprehensible behavior in Wonderland signifies a maturing and growing child.
Alice?s growth is
also represented by her physical changes in size throughout the story.

The theme of ?identity? is a recurring theme throughout the
story as well. In Wonderland, Alice
struggles with the importance and instability of personal identity. She is
constantly ordered to identify herself by the creatures she meets, an issue which
she has difficulties with as well. When the Caterpillar asks her who she is,
she is unable to answer, as she feels that she has changed several times since
that morning. The Pigeon mistakes her for a serpent. The Cheshire Cat questions
Alice's sanity.
She must be mad to enter Wonderland, he states.

The ending of Alice?s Adventures
in Wonderland comes when Alice
woke up from her dream into the ?real? world, the world of adults.
