EMERALD ISLE 2001 Titan Books. 2000 AD Unexpectedly, Judge Dredd is used as a hilarious but highly pertinent piece of political satire about the IRA. When an Irish ambassador is assassinated in Mega City One, (America), with an Irish Spud Gun (Literally designed to kill with potatoes, (Done as chips, roast, mashed or cooked in other ways) Judge Dredd is sent to Ireland (The Emerald Isle) to find the killer He travels first by the undersea tunnel from the US to Ireland, but it becomes a bridge half way there due to the cost of its production. On the way he sees the mutated singing whales, which literally sing variations of Danny Boy as the Judge, passes by. Responsible. Once in Ireland, Judge Joyce helps Dredd. They learn that the Irish object to being treated as stereotypes by England, who have reduced them to a theme park full of leprechauns and whimsical yokels, who eat nothing but spuds (in reality they eat anything but and the Judge Dredd even learns that the potato is extinct, so that the tourists are having to eat synthesized rice instead (a comment on the Irish Potato Famine). The terrorists have had enough of all the blarney, and they aim to reinvent the real Ireland. When the bombings start in earnest, airports, factories and dockyards explode, but the Guinness Brewery mysteriously fails to blow up. Joyce has a laid back approach to law enforcement and he is deeply shocked by Dredd?s approach, until Dredd confronts the main villain and drops him into a potato making machine. There are some great moments of humor amidst the excitement, such as when Dredd drives through a park, which consists of a shrub and a handful of blades of grass, which Dredd?s bike crushes in an instant. Dredd goes home eager to eat anything but potato.
