Being Wanted; Want, Or Need?
(Rose Lorel)

Publicidade
Some call it nostalgia, others call it homesickness. Some write it off as complete and utter folly, while others skillfully hide their feelings.
What is homesickness? Can you explain it as a mere whim, a short lived period of 'the blues' that quickly vanishes after a few moments of utter saddness; or is there more to missing someplace you've been?
Much depends on where you call home; what it's like there. Your home is not necessarily where you live; for many thousands of people are homesick every day; right in the place they've lived all their lives.
Yes, there is more to homesickness than simpky missing a place; it is more than a passing depression. Homesickness is like an open window, letting in a chilly wind of dispair on your otherwise happy existance. It's easy to simply dismiss it as a mere feeling; but is it possible that there is more?
Home, in truth, starts as a feeling; a place where one is secure, and happy in the knowledge that he or she is safe, well cared for, and loved. It is a feeling of belonging, of sorts, a feeling that says 'I am where I belong.'
You may have heard people refer to 'their happy place' and, as absurd as it sounds, they are not far off from the truth.
Children are very inept at picking up such feelings of belonging; and, should a child feel that he or she does not belong, the results can be tragic. Consider this example:

"Lora*, a fourteen year old girl living in Great Britain with her parents, seemed to be a happy and likable person, smart, if somewhat hyper, and easy going. No one would have guessed that this teenager was in truth, a ticking time bomb, ready to explode at a moments notice.
Lora took her life one summer evening; not far from her home."

* Name has been changed.

Cases like that of this young woman are not at all rare, all around the world, suicide rates are increasing. The feeling of being unwanted, or cast aside for something better; often dismissed, is the underlying cause of this outbreak.

Feelings of belonging, of being wanted, cared for, loved, and cherished, are important to people of all ages. Being praised for good work, having meaning in ones life, and having people to care for and be cared for in return, are all important parts of a healthy, happy life.
