Differential Equations With Applications And Historical Notes
(George F. Simmons)
Differential Equations (DE) are not uncommon in modern math texbooks. Many of us find it to be one of the purely methodical (mechanically worked out) streams of maths that's just there, 'cause our teachers say its important for some exam. Many do not understand its history, how DE became the biggest craze among mathematicians because of its simplicity and far more meaningful representation. This book lets you know about the evolution of DE first hand. The author really has not held back much in terms of trivia to excite the initiated minds. The book is filled with historically significant problems like the brachistochrone problem of finding the curve that allows a objet to fall between two points (atleast a little off in the horizontal directionl) in the least time. There are short biographies included in the pages, about Gauss, Euler, Newton and the likes. All these additional pages serve to remind the reader that mathematics is a human endeavour that is initiated and conducted purely because of man's curiosity and not so because people want to make your life miserable by teaching you stuff that is complex and incomprehensible. This book really tells the tale of mathematics; of the people who set the tone for contemporary math and of how humans have evolved their thinking through time. For the well initiated, the book provides a wealth of information and insight on the methods to solve DE of all type. Also, many methods are sited for solving similar types of DE with the view that the reader appreciate the vastness of mathematical methods and the generality of the problem space. Most problems are traditionally tackled in certain specified ways, leaving no room for the student to try and feel free exploring new ways of solving problems. This book, by leaving you to solve the same problems in more than one ways, makes it natural for the reader to feel free tinkering with math and seek for better representation of the problem.
