Story Of Ramu
(Bharat Karmarkar)
1. Story of Ramu This is the story when I was 19 and doing my B.Sc. from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. I lived in Dombivali and I had to travel about one and half hour in railway train before I could reach college. I was fond of social service and was working with a team in Siddharthnagar, one of the slums in Dombivali. We used to engage children in the slums in games every evening, thereby making friendship with them. Slowly, we used to penetrate the minds of their parents and motivate them to upgrade their lifestyle. Though by law, it is compulsory in India to send children of 6 to 14 age to school, hardly any child was admitted in school. Those children used to work with their parents on very low wages and spent whatever they earned in eating from low grade stalls and gambling. It was a challenge before us to change their lifestyle. Ramu was a boy among them. He had sharp eyes, good level of intelligence and good responsive behaviour. He had good leadership qualities and all other children obeyed him during the game sessions. I selected Ramu to be developed as a role model in that community. Many times I asked his father, " Why don't you put Ramu in school?" Every time he used to keep mum. I could notice helplessness as well as self-esteem in his silence. In May 1982, I started talking with Ramu to convince him that he should go to school from June. "But who will give me slate, pencils and books? My father cannot do that." So innocent he was! I assured to get help for him and the boy was prepared psychologically. I went to a Municipal school on 5th June, the first day of that academic year. I was very surprised to hear that the Headmistress expected Ramu's birth certificate before she could admit him in the class. Slightly annoyed, I came back to Ramu's house to get the birth certificate. So depressed I was to hear that his birth was not registered in any government office because his mother was delivered at home by traditional method without hospitalization. Struggling with the situation, I found that making an affidavit in court of law was the remedy. Ramu's parents should sign / thumb the affidavit in front of some Executive Magistrate. I managed to go with Ramu's father in the court of law at Kalyan to get the affidavit. I had to struggle with some greedy beaurocrats who expected some illegal money from us to get the work done. At last, Ramu was put in school from 10th June 1982. Books and other study materials were given to him. In course of time, I had to be away from Dombivali for some months. When I returned to the slums in May 1983, I came to know that Ramu stood first in the first standard annual examinations among all seven Municipal schools in Dombivali. Can you imagine my level of joy when I heard it? Unfortunately, Ramu had to leave his education after third standard. Had I been in Dombivali, I would have done something. My dear readers, there are crores of such Ramus all over the globe. It is observed that proper guidance, proper motivation and sometimes a small amount of money is required to do this. Do you feel like experiencing a similar moment of joy in your life?
