Betrayal

The novel is based on Printer?s clandestine seven year-affair. It shows man betrayad not only but man, but also by time.It is the story of a wife?s seven-year affair whit her husband?s best friend, beginning with a meeting long after the laision is over and ending with the pass at the party that started it all.The play insinuates that, in a perverse way, the marriage was sustained by the adulterous ménage a trios and that the bond between the two men is underlyinggly the most intense.
It is felt throuhgt the character?s gestures that for instance, Jerry, who is a literary-agent lover and believes in love, must be pathetically thick not to realise that Robert, a handsome publisher, knows. Jerry discovers that Robert has known about his and Emma?s affair for years and not merely said nothing but continuous with their regular lunches and games of squash. Whether this is because the cuckold is covering up a clandestine affair himself, or because he does not wish to lose a friend he values more than his wife Emma, who has a feline grace and a palpable sense of hurt, especially in the great central scene when her husband first discovered her infidelity.
