The Indian tribe Apaches came from the far north to settle the plains and southwest this was around A.D 850.
The Apaches settled in three different desert regions, the great Basin, the sonoran and the chihuachuan.
The Apaches tribe spoke the Athabscan language, which originated in their former homeland of northwestern Canada. They exchanged buffalo hides, tallow and meat, bones that could be worked into needles and scrapers for hides, and salt from the desert with the Pueblos for pottery, cotton, blankets, turquoise, corn and other goods. But at times they simply saw what they wanted and took it. They became known among the Pueblo villages by another name, Apachu, "the enemy".
The name Apachu struck fear into the hearts of pueblo tribes. But in time the Apaches and the Pueblos managed to maintain generally peaceful. The Apaches had no religious side. They had no churches, no religious organizations, no Sabbath day, no holidays but yet they worshipped. Sometimes the whole of the tribe would sit together and to sing and pray. Sometimes they had there own little services but they where quite short.
They also had rules, which they had to follow one of them where if an Apache had allowed his aged parents to suffer for food or shelter, if he had neglected or abused the sick, or if he had profaned the Apaches religion, or had been unfaithful, he might be banished from the tribe.
Instead of sending their criminals into prison they sent them out of their tribe. These faithless, cruel, lazy, or cowardly members of the tribe were excluded in such a manner that they could not join any other tribe. Neither could they have any protection from our unwritten tribal laws. When Apaches children were about eight or ten years old they were they slaughtered animals such as herds of deer, antelope, elk and buffalo but this was only done if need be. The skins of the animals were left to make teepees and bedding and the flesh was eat by the tribe together.
The usual weapons used were Bayonets, Bow and Arrows, War Clubs, Shields, and Slings. The bows were made from the branches of Wrights Willow tree. Arrows were made from Chert of Flint as arrowheads. Another deadly source was putting poison made of Deer Spleen in pouches made of Deer Intestine to kill enemy. Bayonets and Saber Blades made of Steal.
Boys not men used slings because they were not deadly enough to kill.
