Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)
I read this book all over again and it never becomes boring. The delicately plotted characters are portrayed with great virtuosity. Jane Austen described only what she knew best, therefore all their books take place in England around 1800 and illustrate mostly landed gentry. The content may be simply reduced to: A mother seeks to marry off her five daughters while her husband is making fun of everything. Eventually few weddings will happen in this family and also in its neighborhood. Not everyone gets his dream partner, but some do after taking a few detours. This mother?s aims and the opinions of her daughters, particularly of Eliza who is very liberated for her time, make this book so valuable and lovable. Being a woman one would wish to meet a Mr. Darcy and to live happily ever after. (Unfortunately, this kind of Gentlemen has been extinct long ago.) The BBC movie with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle may be recommended as well, see Link.
