Herman Hesse creates his work in a clear and simple yet attractive and charming language so that once you begin reading it you cannot let it go and once you are done you cannot prevent yourself but read it again in order to once more revel in its lecture and to experience the wisdom of the things therein. Siddhartha is a talent young man, the son of a Brahman who has at a very young age acquired all the knowledge possessed by his father and teachers, but who cannot find any satisfaction in all that and so decides together with his friend Govinda to leave his family and the learning that he feels he has had too much of in order to join the wandering monks- the shamans. The latter teach him to meditate, to fast, to be content with little, to try and resemble aimals and rocks- despite adjusting to his new entourage Siddhartha cannot find his inner peace. He then hears of a wiseman who roams the country and teaches his beliefs and he seeks him out and listens to the Buddha whose serenity and wisedom win Govinda over and thus he stays behind. Siddhartha wanders on feeling that even though he was part of one entourage or another he was never himself. He leaves the monks and crosses a river in the boat of a man who looked at peace with himself and then reaches a town that will change him profoundly. Next comes the period of Kamala- a courtesan who teaches him about love, who awakens his senses and his desire for wealth. He learns how people live having business or pleasure as their main goal, he manages to do everything they do, but he keeps feeling detached. The time he spends trying to get rich is accompanied by a keen interest in gambling when he loses and wins high amounts of money but this does not satisfy him either. In the end he returns to the old man of the boat who teaches him about the inner silence needed to listen to the river's whispers. A charming valuable book!
