The Bible
(King James Version)

An analysis of The Gospel of St. Mark as we find in the Authorized Version of King James: The life and teachings of Jesus Christ is told in this gospel according to St. Mark in the simplest possible language, is as much as the weighty nature of the subject would permit. But the simplicity has absolutely no contradiction whatsoever with the richness of the poetry, the ?high seriousness? of treatment of the subject. Even epoch making research papers like that of Einstein?s Nobel prize winning treatise can not be so precise and to the point. And nothing is left untold, though the gospel in question is quite short.

John the Baptist prepared the way for the Son of God (?make his path straight?). But he was so humble that he considered himself not worthy to ?stoop down and unloose? the latchet of Jesus Christ. Even King Herod was afraid of laying his hands on John the Baptist lest the multitudes who adored him become angry. Worthy people are always modest. John baptized in wilderness and with water. But Jesus, as John said, would baptize by the Holy Ghost. Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized of John in Jordan. Immediately, when Jesus came out of the water a voice from heaven said ?Thou art my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.? The spirit descended on Jesus, which drove him to the wilderness. Jesus was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan and the angels ?ministered unto him?, that is served him. Then he came to the people to teach them about the Kingdom of God.

Like all great souls that walked on the surface of the earth, the authorities did not like Jesus. But Jesus spoke and taught with such authority that even the elders, the Pharisees and Sadducees sensed his greatness. Multitudes of sick and diseased people came to Jesus and they were cured. Rather, according to Jesus, their faith healed them. But the Pharisees considered this as blasphemous. Even on the day of the sabbath, Jesus did not stop his work of healing the sick. When questioned, he replied, ? The sabbath was made for man and not man for sabbath? the Son of Man of also the Lord of Sabbath.?

A recurrent theme of the gospel is the question of faith. Jesus rebukes his disciple for their lack of faith. When Jesus and his disciples were in the ship in the mid sea a great storm struck and the disciples were very much afraid. Jesus was sleeping then. When he woke up and found the distraught disciples, he made the sea calm by a gesture of his hand and rebuked his disciples for the lack of their faith. Jesus says, ?Be not afraid. Only believe.? ?O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you?? And he further said that all things are possible to him that ?believed?. And a parent of a sick child asks Jesus to help his overcome his disbelief ( Lord, I believe: help thou mine unbelief.) After crucifixion, Jesus himself shouted aloud, ?why hast thou forsaken me?? It merely shows the necessity to keep one?s faith alive under all circumstances.

Jesus guided his disciples in a way that they would stand by the gospel in difficult times too. He ensured that their egos do not clash. When a dispute rose among John and James, his disciples, as to who was the greater among the two, the other ten disciples became angry. But to them also Jesus said that ?whosoever of you will be chiefest, shall be servant of all?. And he warned them that they would be hated by men for the sake of the name of Jesus. ..but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.?

In short, ?St. Mark? is a comprehensive but brief document on Christianity, its origin and teachings. Needless to say it is a literary masterpiece too. Its poetry is lyrical and deep simultaneously.
