Family Matters

The author Rohinton Mistry has received praise and acclaim for his previous novel, "A Fine Balance" and "Family Matters" is a beautifully written too. The story revolves around a Parsi family that consisits of Nariman Vakeel and his three children Coomy, Jal and Roxana. Nariman is inflicted with Parkinsons disease, the cruel affliction in which the patient slowly loses control over his nerves and muscles, while the brain, unaffected sadly witnesses the degeneration and the subsequent loss of dignity that the patient suffers as the family members agonize over his maintainence. Nariman Vakeel stays with Jal and Coomy, children of his departed wife, his own daughter Roxana is married to Yezad a young man who is employed at the Bombay Sporting Goods Emporium. Coomy is unmarried and is extremely ill-tempered, and has no patience in dealing with her father';s illness. She feels burdened with the menial duties that she has to perform as aresult of his condition and looks for ways to get rid of the burden that she considers her father to be. Eventually, Roxana is emotionally blackmailed by Coomy into taking Nariman into her one bedroom apartment to fulfill her share of duties. Rohinton Mistry's detailed characterisation, especially while describing the extremely typical traits of the Parsi community, their habits, customs, rituals and traditions is fascinating. While the novel starts slowly unfolding the temperements of the characters its describes, it builds itself a story that is sensitive, yet intense, it is touching and yet it is the story of any family, of relationships of love and hate, of people who change when circumstances do. A powerful fiction read, it takes the reader on a journey that leaves him sated at the end. The book concludes with the readers faith restored in the winning of good over evil, however this is done in a subtle manner following a sequence of events that change the life of the three siblings.
