The Catcher In The Rye
(J. D. Salinger)

Publicidade
A must read for every young person or anyone who has ever been young! Salinger is a master storyteller and perhaps the only one to capture the story of a search so well! The hero,Holden Caulfield, is being expelled from yet another school and, after yet another disaster, decides to spend a day in New York before facing his parents. There he becomes entangled in his own life questions but still through a jungle of thoughts manages to find the one path... Holden is 17 years old and fed up. He is fed up because he, as coach, has left all the sports material of his team on an underground train. He is fed up with the antics of his roommate and friends who laugh like hyenas over a movie that is totally not good. In fact, he is simply fed up with all the idiots around him. In New York, following a few strange meetings, Holden's aimless wandering through the city takes on the form of a search. Holden's looking for a girlfriend and takes an ex-girlfriend, Sally, to a musical - where they proceed to argue. Holden pays for a prostitute but decides at the last minute that this wouldn't have any meaning - and thereby they both feel fulfilled. He decides in the middle of the night to look up his little sister, Phoebe. Surreptitiously he sneaks into his parent's home and awakens Phoebe. They talk about their brother, Allie, who died - and eventually the talk about Holden. Phoebe holds up a mirror to a kicking and screaming Holden: eventually, there is something good to be found. Outside again, in the New York night, a desperate Holden knocks at the door of one of his old teachers, Mr Antolini, where he spends the night. In the middle of the night he wakes up only to find Mr Antolini is caressing his forehead. Completely shocked Holden flees from the house and sleeps inside the station. There, in the early morning air he suddenly becomes very afraid and he wants to run away, away from everything that's familiar. However, there is one person he should bid farewell before he goes... When he meets Phoebe he finds that she has also packed her bags: she wants to accompany Holden. She is mad when Holden doesn't want to take her with him. After an afternoon spent at the Zoo, Holden and Phoebe end up at a carousel in the park, and Phoebe takes Holden back to their parent's house...
