Counter Attack- The Corps
(W. E. B. Griffin)

Publicidade
This book is all about the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Reading it would make you feel like it was factual as it was based on actual facts but it is really fiction but well written. The main character is Fleming Pickering who owns a fleet of luxury liners. He was so furious of the destruction of Pearl Harbor that he volunteered to return to active service being a marine himself when he was young and served in France. The US government was short of ships and they wanted to buy his luxury liners but he refused at first. He was offered a job at the Navy but could not be convinced until the Secretary of the Navy had to go out of his way to make him accept the job as assistant to the Navy Secretary and granted the rank of captain. He finally sold his ships to the government and converted to warships and his job was to report on the capabilities of the enemy. He has to be the eyes and ears of the Navy Secretary and he is privy to top secret information bestowed on only a few. His report would also be top secret and he had a translator to decrypt all information that is confidential. This made the other officers envious he being a rich civilian and at times they refused to cooperate unless ordered by a higher authority. Rival groups would also be a problem to him as they can be a pain to work with. It depicted McArthur too as having a conflict with a rival general who seems to be favoured by a higher authority and frustrated his plans . It rendered him powerless to act on his intention to liberate the Philippines from the claws of the Japanese empire.
