The Comedy Of Errors
(WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE)

Publicidade
Owing to a feud between Ephesus and Syracuse it was enacted that any merchant from Syracuse found must either pay a thousand marks or suffer death. Aegon, a Syracusean, is arrested in the in the streets of Ephesus but possesses only a hundred marks. He is asked by Solinus, the Duke, why he has ventured to come, knowing the penalty. He replies that he was happily married to Emilia in Syracuse and they had twin sons who were exactly alike ? the two Antipholu?s. Just at the same time a poor woman also gave birth to twin sons ? the two Dromios. Aegon bought the Dromios to attend his own twin sons. On a voyage they were shipwrecked. By tying an Antipholus and a Dromio each to separate masts, and also binding themselves to masts they committed themselves to the waves. They became separated. Emilia , his elder son and the elder slave are rescued by fishermen. But he has never seen them again. Whilst he and his charges were rescued and taken to Syracuse. Years passed and the younger twin now eighteen started off to search for his brother. As he did not return he, Egeon, at the risk of his own life had come to Ephesus to try and find him. The Duke, moved by this sad story, gives Egeon another day in which to find the thousand marks. Strange to say, both his sons are in Ephesus at this time, for the younger son and his slave had arrived there the same day that Egeon had, but had said there were from Epidamnum. The elder son, who lives at Ephesus, is very rich. The young Antipholus, having sent his Dromio for food, is after a time accosted in error by the elder Antipholus?s Dromio. He thinks of course that it is his own servant and Dromio also believes him to be his own master. The servant tells him that his mistress has sent word that dinner is ready. Antipholus being a bachelor gives him a cuff and tells him he has no wife. This, Dromio reports to Adriana the wife of Anthipolus of Ephesus. Adriana comes to the young Antipholus believing him to be her husband and forces him to come to dinner. During dinner the real husband returns but is refused admittance as the servants say their master is already at home. Adriana calls him her husband and a goldsmith gives him a chain telling him it is his. The young Antipholus thinks he is bewitched and wishes to get out of Ephesus. The Antipholus of Ephesus mistakes his brother?s Dromio for his own and confusion becomes confounded for everyone is mistaking the one for the other. Whilst all this is going on, Egeon is awaiting execution, which is to take place near a convent. Here the Antipholus and Dromios meet one another and prove to the Duke the truth of Egeon?s tale. The Abbes turns out to be Egeon?s wife, the old man is pardoned and all live happily in Ephesus.
