False Impression
(Jeffrey Archer)
Jeffrey Archer's latest offering, coming in the wake of his disastrous prison dairies and using the backdrop of 9/11 does little to satisfy his die- hard fans. This is one Jeffrey Archer that neither lives up to the reputation of the author nor measures up to the standards he had set for himself through earlier works. Following an art historian and an FBI agent through their sojourn across the globe to prevent a major art swindle and bring a fraudster posing as a banker to book, it offers no thrills and no twists that are not beaten to death already in dozens of other books on the same lines. September 11 is just used as a starting point and is not vital to the plot- a dubious strategy that is in itself not in very good taste when you realise the author just mentions it to grab some unmerited attention. Thrown in is an ex- Romanian cut- throat killer who just adds to the confusion without really contributing any chills or thrills. In fact, all the characters are so hackneyed that you cant believe that this is the same Jeffrey Archer who could leave such indelible impressions in just a couple of pages. False Impression indeed! The plot is predictable; the supense is something the author helpfully reveals on the thirtieth or so page so that the remaining 350 are rendered superflous and one thing you keep wondering is why on earth the art historian does not keep out of things that dont really concern her. Give it a miss and re- read Da Vinci Code if you have nothing better to occupy yourself with.
