Publicidade
Septicemia, or blood poisoningÑan invasion of the bloodstream by bacteriaÑis characterized by high fever, sweating, and weakness that are caused by the destruction of red blood cells. Death quickly follows very high fever. Septicemia is a serious disorder but has become less common since the development of antibiotics, especially penicillin. Before the introduction of antiseptics into delivery rooms, puerperal fever, or childbed fever, which results from uterine infection, was a common form of septicemia.
