Sua primeira publicação data de 1960 com o conto “The Furious Season”. Porém seu primeiro livro só viria a ser publicado em 1976 sob o titulo “Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?” . Que seria selecionado para a aparecer na coletânea “Best American Short Stories 1967”. A coletânia foi indicada para o premio “National Book Award”. Seu livro mais conhecido é a coletânea de contos “Cathedral” que conta com os premiados contos “A Small, Good Thing” e “Where I’m Calling From”.
