Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)
I like reading this book again and again. It is never boring. If possible, all books by Jane Austen should be read in the original English language. Her incredibly sensitively drawn characters are expressed with great verbal humour. On purpose Jane Austen only wrote about that with which she was familiar, consequently all her books are set in the England of about 1800. She describes her own class, she's a parson's daughter, as well as those above (the landed gentry )and below her, among them workers and servants. The action itself could be reduced the formula: A mother seeks husbands for her five daughters, and her own husband finds that very amusing. There are indeed several weddings, not only in her own family. Not everyone gets their dream partner, but some do, after some detours. What makes the book so readable are the intentions of the mother and the thoughts of her daughters. Of the latter especially the emancipated Eliza stands out. From the point of a female reader one could could really also habour the wish to meet a Mr. Darcy and perhaps marry him. Unfortunately, today there are no longer such gentlemen to be found. The BBC film of this book with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is also worth watching.
