Modesty Blaise
(Peter O'Donnell)
Peter O'Donnell first published this book in 1965! My! how time flies when you are having fun! In 1965 I was sharing a flat with my colleagues, only 19 and the world and its riches ahead of me! The book itself is a little bit dated I feel, that's the negative I include, but on a more positive side its racey and punchy and you get a little bit of enjoyment out of the old fashioned phrases of the time ./Ow's your luck matey/ I am sure I can't imagine these days anyone speaking like that: the dialogue is very much of the period. The book arose from a strip cartoon which spanned 38 years of unparalled success and was sold in 40 countries ... the character of Modesty Blaise was invented in 1963 - and the theme of Intelligence and spying is regarded as 'eternal' - it depicts the character of Modesty Blaise in her first adventure for British Intelligence with her loyal lieutenant, Willie Garvin as popular culture! I suppose, it still holds a fascination for a modern day audience! Though most telly viewers of that generation would remember too /Emma Peel/ along the same lines! I enjoyed the inclusion of French dialogue with a bit of Arabic thrown in for good measure /Un mouche/ ... Salam alekum, sayyide' ... Modesty replied: /Allah ma yuhishek / gravely spoken I hasten to add. Certainly a worthwhile read ... hope you enjoy ..
