Dusk

Dusk is the first of a series written by Tim Lebbon. It is set in a fantastic land of Noreela in a time when Magic has died. Now, Magic has been reborn in the form of a young boy named Rafe Baburn and two opposing factions are out to get their hands on him--one to stop Magic's rebirth and the other to take control of it.The story starts in Rafe's village where a Red Monk, one of those dedicated in making sure Magic does not return, arrives looking for the young boy and in the process slaughters everyone in it. Rafe, however, manages to escape along with a thief named Kosar. Kosar takes Rafe to Noreela city where the young boy's uncle lives. Leaving the boy with his uncle, Kosar goes on his own to meet his old lover, a mysterious female warrior of the Shantasi race. Rafe, though, deciding to roam around the city becomes lost and meets a witch. But the Red Monks are hot on the boy's trail and in no time arrive in Noreela City. The four meet up and manage to get out of the city where they meet a young librarian and a miner. Everyone agrees to help the young boy escape from the clutches of the Red Monks and the Mages, the old weilders of Magic and determined to control it once more. The story continues with the journey of the band of reluctant heroes as they try to protect the boy and give Magic its time to develop and ultimately manifest itself.Dusk is a fantasy unlike any other, dark and gothic, with graphic descriptions of violence and sex. Aside from the author's tendency to excessively elaborate on details that in no way progresses the plot or are essential to the scene, the story still manages to be interesting enough to be read till the last page. The author, however, deserves some credit for the novelty of his fantastic creatures and for successfully creating well-drawn, fleshed out characters.
