If you like fishing then the following story is definitely for you to read.
There were four tramps, heading wherever into the wide world and they were accepted half from mercy into the poorest tourist class of the ship. Somewhere behind Gibraltar the ship, however lost its rudder. A nearby sailing steamer therefore had to pull us and when it was impossible to repair the fault even after a big effort they were set off in the Dakar of Senegal.
What now? To seek work, accommodation, earn one?s living?
A trip to the pyramids! The proposal of the Ukrainian is very quickly rejected because there are no pyramids in Dakar.
Go and seek lions! This idea, in the same way as the proposal of Weiss from Germany who wanted to undertake an expedition into the region of cannibals, was rejected after a live debate. They decided therefore that they would go for a swim.
They are frolicking on the waves of the Atlantic. They are rather noisy and making most of their time when a group of riders is approaching them on the sandy beach. In the front an officer is galloping in a shiny uniform, he is pulling the bridle for the horse and from the height of his saddle he is calling strictly. Francais? Anglais? Allemands? Russes? Espagnoles?
He is trying to find out their state citizenship. And the answer is hard.
One is German, one is Greek, the other Ukrainian and Otakar is Czech.
The oldest, Weiss from Germany stands in Adam?s vesture in front of the officer and festively proud of his language knowledge announces.
?Monsieur, here sind tutti frutti alles nach Amerika Sud, compra?? With this many language Esperanto he is trying to say, Sir, we are from many countries and we want to get to South America.
The officer who was first very serious laughs now and talks to them through a similar international language.
Young men, do your best to disappear quickly. First you entered a forbidden fort zone, and secondly you are swimming carelessly, damned, it swarms here with sharks.
Then he was still trying to explain something but they could not understand it for nothing in the world. They did not take a hint till the evening. As a matter of fact they were covered with some sea parasites, which did not let them sleep.
In the morning Vasil came up with new idea. Go fishing!
They set off to a remote part of the port, with pieces of meat in their hands, strings and a few firm rods and lines. They have thrown the bait into the sea. Bottle tops were replacing their floats.
It was not long before one float sunk. Something pulled. A vehement jerking of the string is indicating that it will be a really big piece. They are pulling their catch on the shore. Really a nice fish is tossing about on dry land. Otakar wants to grab it, but what is happening. Amazed they are observing their catch.
The fish is bloating. It grows in front of their eyes. It is getting bigger and bigger, it looks like it?s going to burst any minute.
It is already round as a big football and is still gaining in volume.
Touch it! We are encouraging each other.
Heroes! What can happen to me? I am touching the fish but presently I jump away with fright.
Woof, woof, woof! For God?s sake, the fish is barking!
With their eyes on top of their heads they are staring at the weird catch.
A customs officer is walking towards them from the port. Boys, throw it back into the water! It?s inedible ? dog fish!
And how is that it barks? Otakar is asking the officer. He explains with a smile. It is some kind of a sea hyena. It eats everything it finds. As a matter of fact it cleans the sea in the port. If it is attacked ? it inflates and then it contracts again very quickly. The air that is lets out is similar to barking. But boys, be careful! Look at its teeth. It has got an enormous strength in them. It can easily bite a finger off.
The fun of Senegal?s Dakar is not exactly the most successful.
Otakar is breaking the party and lets himself be hired on the nearest ship, sailing. ?Where,Mr. Captain? ?. Good! Good-bye friends and see you in Montreal.
