Freakonomics
(Steven D.Levitt and Stephen J.Dubner)
Abstract: Freakonomics is a departure from classical approach of analyzing people or situations by going under the surface and uncover how incentives, motivations or risks play a major role in day-to-day happenings in our society. Steven D. Levitt and coauthor Stephen J. Dubner have analyzed various case studies related to wide cross section of society to establish that incentives in the form of financial, social, or moral; play both positive and negative effect where some teachers of public schools or auto mechanics cheat to retain their job while , Sumo wrestlers rig the game to maintain their ranking . Similarly, specialists like, doctors, real state agents, contractors, lawyers ,stock brokers, financial planners use / abuse information to exploit their clients. However, with easy access to information through internet , more clients are pre-informed and extent of abuse of information may reduce. The authors remind us that often most of us deliberately conceal/withhold or even abuse information while seeking election to a post, selection for a job or admission to an institution, editing news for a TV channel, dating, business relationship, matrimonial and even Nations could manipulate information to make a case to go to war. Freakonomics highlights how government executives and judiciary linked legalization of abortion as the main factor for decline in crime while law enforcing agencies like CIA, Police took credit for their effective strategies and hard punishment to reduce crime in the country. Similarly, the statistician did not lag behind and took the stance that most hard core criminals have gone old and as such crime had come down. It proves how we change our stance to align ourselves with emerging situation. The reality is that crime like robbery, burglary , kidnapping, drug paddling have financial motivation while murder, rape or other destructive and unlawful activities would have some other strong motivation.
