The Eagle Has Landed
(JACK HIGGINS)
THE EAGLE HAS LANDED ---- JACK HIGGINS One of the best works of Jack Higgins, The Eagle Has Landed is definitely a must read. The book is part fact and part fiction dealing with the attempt by German paratroopers, the elite of the elite Fallschirmjager, to kidnap the then British wartime prime minister, Winston Churchill and take him dead or alive to Germany. The leader of such extraordinary a task is in himself a wonder, Lieutenant-Colonel Kurt Steiner, half American half German is a man with disdain for authority, a war hero serving a penal unit, loved like god by his men, blackmailed into committing himself to this venture by Himmler in exchange for his father?s life. This is one of the very few books that paints an unbiased and humanitarian picture of German soldiers led by an autocratic madman bent upon world domination. The plot is fast paced, mindblowingly interesting and riveting to the core taking the reader from one high to another, leading to an explosive finish. The work of a masterful storyteller, who blends fact and fiction into one, The Eagle Has Landed is a book that can be read time and again and remains a faithful mistress entertaining and delighting the reader always. From personal experience I can say that in the past year, this has been one among the very few books that I have read over five times and yet look forward to reading it once again.
