Miniatlas Of Millenium Development Goals
(WORLD BANK REPORT)
The third in a series of '' snapshot presentations '' of great value to journalists, researchers, planners and others interested in global development, this miniatlas subtitled, '' BUILDING A BETTER WORLD'' is simple and easy to use.Earlier ones highlighted socio-economic and environment data for the world's economies and the second, the world's most pressing challenges like increasing demand for energy and water, rising pollution and declining biodiversity. This third book, under review, lists the eight development goals and targets adopted by the United Nations[2001] and the measures suggested towards achieving these. Most of these Development Goals, like reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS, improving maternal health, promoting gender equality, achieving universal primary education and eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, are then succinctly discussed and explained with the aid of maps and charts.Definitions, notes and sources are listed on the last page to help verification and clear understanding. Each goal merits a chapter, evaluates progress towards achievement and gives relevant details. For example, Goal 7 is 'Ensuring Environmental Sustainability'. Illustrated by a very colourful photograph of African women, some with babies on their backs, drawing scarce water from a well contains a map describing water access and a chart showing improvement in access and another map showing emissions of carbondioxide that contributes to climate change, along with a tab chart comparing low, middle and high-income economies in this growing area of concern. This is followed by a lot of information on these subjects listed country-wise.Some of the illustrations like the one described earler of African women drawing water, also draw our attention to other inequalities like gender disparity, unequal distribution of labour in child-rearing and fulfilling household responsibilities. Colourful, brief and clear, the book is attractive and comes in a very handy and easy-to-use format.A decidedly useful acquisition for anyone interested in global development and the challenges facing us in the twentyfirst century. --- VISA RAVINDRAN.
