These People Honor Me With Their Lips
(Lynnette Brashear)

?These people honor me with their lips?

but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men. You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men.?
(Mark 7:6-9)

Jesus spoke these words and I have no doubt in my mind He?s saying those same words today about our society. We have SOOOOO many different denominations and traditions but we?re serving the same God. It just seems to me that people have lost sight on the big picture. It is a good thing to be associated with a church, but when you begin to believe that your work as a Christian stops in the walls of that building then we have a problem.

We are often times quick to say, ?I?m a Christian?, however we are stuck holding tight to the traditions of men. Sometimes it seems like we?re so stuck on the traditions of man that we?re missing a major move of God. We aren?t working together as the body of Christ. Unfortunately most times it?s competition between churches and ministries.

Too many of us rely on the interpretation of the word from others. We need to study for ourselves and lean on the understanding from the Holy Spirit. Preachers are messengers and/or prophets and often speak life and confirmation to their flock, however, we still hold the responsibility to study the word and spend time every day with the Lord. We still are held accountable for our own actions before God and responsible to know the Word ourselves so much so that we can pass it accurately on to our children.

In society today we have it so backwards. We have people who will pay their credit card bills and Department Store bills faithfully every month, YET they can?t seem to sacrifice an offering for God. Many times we tip God and spend extravagantly on material things and ourselves.

I?m so disgusted that we can spend major dollars on an emblem, a designer?s name, etc. YET these same people can?t see their way to spend any where near that to further a ministry. God is too often receiving the leftovers. We tip God, and poorly at that, while we chase the American dream. Our priorities are WAY out of whack.

People lack understanding about the concept of giving and sowing seeds. It?s like we feel that when we send our money to a ministry we?re helping the people of that ministry and forgetting that actually you?re sowing a seed that ultimately that will benefit you, the ministry and honor God. Now that?s not to say that all ministries are on the up and up and if you listen to your Spirit the Lord will let you know. But let?s just say that you do sow a seed to a ?business? claiming to be Godly and they abuse your seed. The win-win situation of this is you?ll still be blessed because it was in your heart to give and the business?well?that?s between them and God.

We as a nation are so hung up on fleshly traditions of man that we?re missing God in a major way. If we as the body of Christ were truly working on one accord, it would show in our society. There would be no serious violence in our schools. There would be no separation of church and state, etc.

If those who honor God with their lips truly honored Him with their hearts as well, we would see a major change in neighborhoods, cities, states, nations, and the world. Open your eyes to a world that is going mad due largely to the closed eyes of the saints. We let the weeds spring up while we go to services weekly (if that) and get a warm fuzzy feeling, while there?s a whole world of lost souls waiting for us to WAKE UP and tear down needless traditions and come together, truly together as the body of Christ.

It?s not a white thing, a black thing, a latino thing, Baptist thing, Catholic thing, or Methodist thing, etc.?but it?s a GOD thing. One God, One Faith, One Baptism. We?re talking about traditions that are superceding the need for the body of Christ to be on one accord. Can we not find ONE thingto agree on? Can we start concentrating on saving souls outside the walls of the buildings we go to each week? Can we stop depending on the preachers, the deacons, the choir and anybody else to reach those who are lost and take the responsibility that was given to us to spread the gospel? Ministers and their staff have to be the most overworked people because a number of their flock is stuck on the need for milk for their spiritual food as opposed to taking the time and studying and praying every day on their own and maturing to the point where they are taking in meat for their spiritual food.

?They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.? (Mark 7:7) The sad part of it is too many people don?t know the word of God well enough to decipher whether they?re hearing a man-made rule or God?s law. Study the word, seek God daily and know the law of God and not the tradition of man.
