Isn't This The Carpenter's Son
(Lynnette Brashear)

Isn?t This the Carpenter?s Son?
Unfortunately, those closest to a prophet are often the last to offer their acceptance of this person in the office of a prophet. The passage states that Jesus began teaching the people in their synagogue and they were amazed. The people were amazed. If Jesus were a stranger to these people, speaking the same words, they would have been amazed AND would have accepted Him and the truth He was speaking.
Instead they started talking amongst themselves. There?s nothing like a crowd that starts to murmur. ?Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? Isn?t this the carpenter?s son?? They didn?t even dignify Him by stating His earthly father?s name. In a way to make Him appear smaller, bring Him down to their level, they recognize Him as ?the carpenter?s son?.
Many people are trapped by what other people see. Jesus possessed great power and knowledge and even though He displayed it and in an awesome way, they still tried to make Him less than what He was. He still had the power to be great regardless of how the people perceived Him. I say this to say, don?t let other people dictate what or who you are. You have the power within you to be great and accomplish great things. You have Christ, the Hope of Glory residing in you. How can you be anything less than great? Yet day after day, people accept the label of society and live mediocre lives.
The townspeople attempted through their words and actions to make Him common and they didn?t recognize Him for who He was, as a matter of fact, they took offense at Him.
Jesus said ? ?Only in His hometown and in His own house is a prophet without honor?. People just can?t seem to look past the familiar. Even though Jesus amazed them, they couldn?t get past the fact that He was from among them. If the Lord tells you something to do, and you know it was the Lord and it is something amazing, do it. Rest assured there will be plenty of negative people trying to talk you out of it because they see the flesh in you and not the Christ in you. It makes them uncomfortable that you, someone who is just like them, would have the faith to step out and do something big. They are afraid to step out of the box, and amazingly enough don?t want you to either. These same people are often afraid to step out and prefer to remain in their comfort zone and either offer you no support or only speak doubt and negativity toward what you are trying to accomplish. Limit your contact with these people because their intent is to plant self-doubt in you and cause you to second guess and wonder whether you can do what the Lord told you to do. Don't forget that you can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you, especially if it?s God?s will for your life.
When you hear the negative remarks, and you know that?s what they are, (not constructive criticism) smile at them and say to yourself, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. You can hear it, but don?t receive it.
Because of their lack of faith, He didn?t perform many miracles there; once again demonstrating that faith is an important part of the equation. We must have faith that He can and will perform whatever miracle we?re in need of. Once again, He still had the power to perform miracles, but He didn?t.
The people wrongly perceived Him as just being a ?carpenter?s son? but He was capable of performing such great works. Believe that you are capable of doing much more than the ordinary through Christ?so go out and do it.
