WHO IS MOLIERE?
His real name is Jean-Baptiste Poquelin ( - ), he wrotes many plays, like D.Juan, The Miser, etc.
The century he's living in will enable him to write plays criticizing what's wrong, making laugh of them! Even the plays he acted behind the King were an enormous amusement for the King himself.

WHO ARE THE CHARACTERS?

The «doctor» and his wife
Sganarelle- inspired on the same Sganarelle of Comedia dell'Arte, is the principal character, and the doctor despite himself.
He's almost in scene all the time.
On the beggining, he's a brutal man and drunk (but who has some spirit and a bit of culture); at the end, he gets money and, even if he's scoundrel most of the times, a bit of consideration.

Martine- Sganarelle's wife, she appears on the first and last act.It's her who have beggined this whole story when she introduced her husband as an exceptional doctor. She shows a clever spirit as her husband.

The father of the «sick» girl
Géronte- he's stubborn and not very friendly. Tyrant father, he wants to impose a husband to his daughter Lucinde, but he will hand over the possible fortune Leandre will get.

The lovers
Lucinde- daughter of Geronte, she's against the fatherly power. To escape marriage, she pretends to be dumb and will only speak to confirm her wish to marry Leandre.

Leandre- he's young, beautiful, friendly, in love and less important for the play.

WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?

Martine's revange
In the first act, Martine was hit by her husband, Sganarelle, and so she decide to take revenge on him, making everyone believe that is a doctor but that he accepts to see the patients only after they hit him.
We can see on this act the transformation of the farmer Sganarelle into a «doctor».

Time passes, and he's more and more convicted of his forced job, he will be involved in the complicated love beetwen Léandre and Lucinde, and at the end, we see how Sganarelle will still be a doctor.

WHAT MESSAGE DOES THE PLAY WANT TO TRANSMIT?
With this play, Moliere wanted to criticise the true and the false doctors. The true doctors, on his days, just wanted to make money and usually, the patients died because of the «remedies» they gave and not because of the disease they had if they really had one!
And the false doctors for being impostors, and just wanted to make money.
