Whistle Me Home
(barbara wersba)
the teenage years, though agrivating, are sadistically beautiful. its the period in our lives when we're required to find acceptance for ourselves. dig deep inside and battle the pains of looking in the mirror and yearning to destroy the everpresent image of failure. Noli felt just that and more. being a tomboyish seventeen year old girl and delving into substance abuse to tranquilize her agony was her daily routine. her family life sank gradually and she was hardly motivated to succeed academically. the alcohol consumed her. how easy it is to relate, whether her age presently or having once been, to that twisted mentality of not giving a damn anymore for oneself because no one around you does. TJ came into her life, perfection in human form, gorgeous, with a mind, a soul, and the sensitivity so unbefitting to a male his age. their gravitation to each other seemed inevitable, not only because they were both artistically inclined. she wanted him fully, but tragically realized it would never be. TJ couldnt be with a woman, he was gay, and merely chose her because of her physical likeness to a guy. the way the emotion unfolds is bespelling. wersba does it in a way that you're not intimidated by the character. you want to jump in the story and give Noli a shoulder to cry on, or perhaps find her a suitable match, or more importantly tell her you've been down but can help her put her life together. she does recover, she does survive, and she does learn to love herself. she's not some sick individual. she didnt regret the TJ ordeal, no matter how embarassing or heartbreaking. it was the key to her recovery, the push, the last straw. she looked at him with understanding, seeing him with another guy. that would kill any girl. this book is an original in every way. the characters are insanely deep, not to mention real. this book is worth the read, worth the experiences, and perhaps and unlikely source for life lessons.
