Eleven Minutes
(Paulo Coelho)
The story of the book is about Maria, a brasilean girl that ends up being a protitute in Switzerland. The story is half told by a narrator and half told by Maria herself through some extracts from her diary. Maria lives in Brazil with her family but she wants more. Her relationships have not gone well (tough truly she is too young) and one day she meetsa brasilian business man that invites her to Rio and mekes the proposal of her life. Go to Europe to work as a dancer, make a lot of money and come back to Brazil being rich and powerful . At that moment, she is woiçrking as an employee in a shop and is certain that her boss is in love with her and shortly he will propose and ask her in marriage, but as said before she is looking for something better, so she decides to throw herself to the adventure and go to Europe. But when she gets there, she does not find what she expects. The reader, at least me, expects that the dancer thing will be just a screen to end up working as a prostitute, but it is not like that. She really goes there to work as a dancer, but the conditions as not exactly as promised, nor was she going to make so much money nor would she be so fine as promised. So she decides to quit this job and finds another because with the money she has made being a dancer she can live a whole season in Switzerland. But money is running out and she has to find a way to subsist as the idea of returning to Brazil with no money and beaten is not in her head. She looks for jobs without getting one, learns french and after a long time she has an enterwiew that does not go as expected as she ends up sleeping with the entervierwer for 1000 francs. With this new way of making money, se thinks of continuing and goes to the prostitution zone and enters the first shop she sees. There she will stay. At the beginning she thinks about the reason why she has decided to make a linving out of it. She has moral doubts aboout whether what she is doing is correct, but she sees it as a quick way to make money and return to Brazil and do what se wanted, buy her parents a house and live with dignity. But from then on, being a sex professional, she thinks about her new profession and sex in general. At the bar, she meets two very important clients for her, on one side there is a famous painter and on the other a record company business man that will make her see two different worlds and make her change. While the painter offers her stability something she has always dreamed about, the other shows her the other side of prostitution, sadomasoquism and humilliation, something that despites her at the beginning fut finally accepts as it starts to attract her. It is quite symbolic and something about choosing white or black, right or worng, two sides of the coin. I have to admit that that part is well achived as it is pretty metaforic, eventhough I do not know if that was the intention. I will not tell how it ends because you will discover that by yourselves (if you decide to read it) tough it is easy to see. Even whn the novel has not pleased me I do not think I will ever read something else from this author and this time I am for real. He tries to mix pure and hard reflection with a quite conventional story and full of topics. But in the end what really matters is not what you tell but how you tell it. Of course I think it is an abuse to pay ? 22 to read this. There is a moment when Maria speaks about books and says she does not buy themas she thinks it is not worth it to pay for something she can read for free (she means at the library) so I as well invite you borrow this book from the library or download it from Internet.
